Busy Mom Gets Fit

by Valerie Solomon

If your children told you they really wanted to do something, but they were afraid of what others would think, or that they were nervous, scared, or were not quite sure were to begin, what would you say?

“It does not matter what people think.  What matters is that you go after your goals and what you want.”

Maybe you were like most of America and recently started (and already ended) a health and fitness journey.  Maybe you have not begun yet because you are not even sure where to start or you are afraid of what others will think.  Maybe you lack the confidence to walk into a gym.

I encourage you to take the advice you would give your child.  Be the person you want your children to be – a healthy, happy, confident person that lives her life to its fullest potential.

Do not just cheer from the sidelines, “Try harder!” or “Don’t quit!”  Be an example for your children of what trying hard looks like.

If you are nervous, scared, or not feeling confident about changing your habits, do just as you would tell your child– “Fake it ‘til you make it.”  Walk in to the gym or exercise class with your head held high and with a plan.  Eventually, with persistence, confidence will come.

Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve
me and I learn.  – Benjamin Franklin

Telling your children to try hard and go after goals might work.  Showing them is great.  But, involving them in your journey is even better.  Not only will it hold you accountable, it will be teaching them lifelong skills.

  • Go on family hikes, bike rides, and races.
  • Play sports together.
  • Involve them in your favorite workouts at home.
  • Have constant conversations about healthy food.

if you are not quite sure where to start, here are some simple tips:

Eat healthy.

Choose lean meat and vegetables cooked in a healthy way (grilled, baked, steamed, a little olive oil, etc.).
