From Hobby to Handmade Business: Beyond the Galaxy Creations
At an age when many teens are still discovering their interests, Lydia Kiker has already turned her passion for creating into a thriving small business. As the founder of Beyond the Galaxy Creations, Lydia is proving that creativity, determination, and a willingness to learn can take you further than you ever imagined.
How Beyond the Galaxy Creations Began
Lydia’s journey began by making jewelry for herself, friends, and family. At just 9 years old, she started selling her handmade creations during homeschool park days. As more people began buying her designs, she realized her hobby could become something much bigger.
Today, Lydia creates jewelry, crochet items, and custom pieces while keeping a booth stocked year-round at 82 Marketplace in New Boston, Texas. She also participates in holiday vendor events and recently launched a YouTube channel, @galaxy_cre8, where she shares tutorials and behind-the-scenes looks at her creative process.
“What I enjoy most is taking an idea and bringing it to life,” Lydia says. “Every project is an opportunity to learn something new and create something even better.”

Learning to Balance School and Business
Balancing school, customer orders, vendor events, and inventory hasn’t always been easy. “School comes first,” she says. “I’ve learned that having a schedule and not overcommitting myself is important.”
Her mother, Sylvia, has watched that growth firsthand. “This business really helped build her confidence and helped her come out of her shell,” she says. “Each time one of her creations brought a smile to a customer’s face, she grew stronger.”
Lydia’s Advice: Start Small and Stay Consistent
Lydia hopes her story encourages other young people to pursue their passions without letting age stand in the way. “Start small and stay consistent,” she says. “You don’t have to be perfect—you just need to start.”
Whether she’s designing beaded earrings, crocheting while listening to music, studying at Texarkana College, or dreaming of launching her own website, Lydia continues to show that big dreams often begin with one small, creative step.
