How to Make a Tutu

In this time of year filled with sugar plum fairies and dancing snowflakes, your little girl may be looking for a tutu of her own to help her feel a part of the holiday season magic. Tutus are easy to make and are a fun, girly addition to any holiday or special occasion outfit. The Internet, especially a site like Pinterest, offers lots of creative tutu ideas. Once you have in mind what you would like to make, you can start!
Supplies
- 2 or 3 spools of tulle (or tulle by the yard)
- Elastic, tape measure, thread, needle
Directions
First
Measure around your child’s waist, or around her chest for a longer tutu skirt. Cut the elastic 1/2 to 1 inch smaller than the measured length as you want the tutu to fit snuggly against her.
Second
Measure from your child’s waist (or chest) to her knee for a shorter tutu or ankle for a longer skirt. Cut strips of tulle that are DOUBLE that length.
Third
Sew the elastic band together. It’s helpful to have a large coffee can or vase to place the elastic band around to hold it in place while you tie the tulle on. Take a strip of tulle, and fold it in half so that it makes a loop. Put the fold on the inside of the elastic. Slip the ends of the tulle through the loop, and pull it into a tight knot. Continue to tie on strips of tulle, pushing the knots together as tightly as possible. The more tulle that you fit on the elastic, the fluffier the tutu will be.
Fourth
Once you have tied tulle all the way around, take a minute to even out the knots going around the band, and straighten out and fluff up the strips of tulle. You’re finished, and your little girl has a fabulous new accessory for the holiday season!
