Jump for Joy with Jump Ropes

Three kids jumping rope

Jumping rope is a game that many generations can remember with fondness. It can accomplish many objectives at once – entertainment, fitness, coordination, and pure fun. Jump ropes are also inexpensive. So grab a jump rope and jump along with your kids!

Jumping rope can burn up to 1000 calories per hour. The greatest weight supported while skipping rope 10 times is 407.8 lb by James Thompson on June 9, 2010 as reported in Guinness World Records.

Jump Rope Rhymes

Here are three examples of many rhymes that children sing while jumping rope. Sometimes a song is also a game and requires the participant to complete specific moves while jumping rope or jump for the longest period of time.

Doctor, Doctor

Doctor, doctor call the doctor,
Cindy’s (name of child jumping)
gonna have a new born baby.
Wrap it up in tissue paper,
send it down the elevator,
Boy, girl, twins or triplets
Boy, girl, twins or triplets

Repeat this until the person jumping misses on one of them. This means the person will be having a boy, girl, twins or triplets.

Down By The River

Down by the river, down by the sea,
Johnny broke a bottle
and blamed it on me.
I told ma, ma told pa,
Johnny got a spanking so
ha ha ha.
How many spankings
did Johnny get?
1, 2, 3….

Keep counting until the jumper messes up.

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, turn around,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, touch the ground
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, show your shoe
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, that will do!
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, go upstairs
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, say your prayers
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, turn out the lights
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, say good-night!

The children jump rope while they sing this rhyme, acting out the actions as the words come up in the rhyme. An example: when they say go upstairs, the child pretends to climb the stairs.
