How the Whole Family Can Avoid Media Overuse

  1. Set aside some time for family activities that don’t involve any digital media. Yes, movie night is fun, but try something more hands-on or get outside for a change of pace.
  2. Try cutting down on screen time before bed; this means you, too, mom & dad. Studies show that electronic use before bed creates restless sleep patterns.
  3. Do some research about what apps and games really do provide intellectual benefit instead of putting anything with bright colors in front of your child.
  4. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no TV for babies under age 2. Hands-on activities and simple interaction with people offer more educational stimulation.
  5. Consider not having a television in your child’s room, especially if he or she is having trouble in school.
  6. Bring along some game or story ideas for your next road trip instead of a stack of DVD’s. Remember when all we had was the license plate game?
  7. When you aren’t watching TV, turn it off. This small move can make a big impact, and cut down on your electric bill.
