Good Design With Kids in Mind: Mudrooms

by Lynlee Harvey

As you design a mudroom for your home, consider how your family lives. Then, create an orderly space that functions for the whole family. A mudroom is generally located just inside the garage or near the back door so that as you enter the home you can store your things before they are strewn about the house. In this space, everything is a quick grab as you are running out the door each morning.

A place for everything and everything in its place

Take inventory of what your family brings in and out of the house each day. Consider backpacks, purses, keys, coats, shoes, sports equipment, scarves, pet leashes, etc. Assign each member of the family a cubby, locker, basket, cabinet or set of hooks. Include a few extra for your friends’ gear.

Keep in line and in touch

If room allows, include a desk or a message center to stay on top of your organization. This is the perfect spot for a family computer and phone. A charging station for cell phones and other electronic equipment is another great addition. Incorporate this into a drawer or cabinet as you design your space.
