1. Stick Together

Young children should always trick-or-treat with an adult. Older kids going without a parent should stay with a group and never wander off alone.

2. Plan the Route

Before older kids head out, agree on where they’re going, when they’ll be home, and how they’ll check in. Make a group text with parents and kids to check-in.

3. Light the Way

Carry flashlights or glow sticks and add reflective details when possible. Stick to well-lit streets and only visit homes with their outside lights on.

4. Stay Street Smart

Use sidewalks whenever possible. Cross at corners or designated crosswalks, look both ways, and avoid crossing between parked cars.

5. Costumes That Fit

Make sure costumes and shoes fit well to help prevent trips and falls. Avoid masks or accessories that block vision, and test face paint or makeup ahead of time for skin reactions.

6. Never Go Inside

Children should never enter someone’s home or vehicle while trick-or-treating, even if they are invited. Stay outside and with your group.

7. Check Before You Eat

Have an adult inspect candy before anyone digs in. Throw away anything that is opened, damaged, or suspicious. Avoid homemade treats from people you don’t know.
