5 Tips for Stress-Free Family Living
Families today are busier than ever, and sometimes it can feel like a lot to manage. Over the years, our family has found a few everyday habits that reduce stress and help keep things running smoothly — and the house a little cleaner. These five simple tips can help reduce stress and get everyone involved.
Make a weekly menu
Walking in the door after work and hearing, “What’s for dinner?” can send anyone over the edge. To save your sanity, try making a weekly menu. It doesn’t have to be fancy. A scrap of paper, a dry erase board, or a printed sign all work fine. The goal is to make sure everyone can see what’s planned. Not only does this help with the dreaded question, but it also allows you to prepare and budget groceries for the week.
Create a chore schedule
Forgetting chores happens to all of us, kids and parents alike. A simple schedule helps keep everyone on track. Write out the days of the week and what needs to be done each day. Younger kids will love checking off boxes or adding stickers when they’re done, and as they grow, you can adjust chores to match their abilities.
Double recipes
When you’re cooking dinner, go ahead and make extra to freeze for later. If you’re browning one pound of ground beef for tacos, cook two. Once it cools, bag up the extra and pop it in the freezer. On a busy night, you’ll have a ready-to-go meal waiting to be reheated — a lifesaver when time is short.
Keep a donation box
To help cut down on clutter, our family keeps a donation box in the laundry room. Whenever someone finds something they no longer need whether that be clothes, toys, or household items, it goes right in the box. When the box fills up, we take it to a donation center. It’s a simple habit that keeps things organized and pays it forward.
Tidy time
Once a week, we set a timer for 20 minutes and everyone pitches in. It’s not a deep clean, just a quick pick-up: putting things away, folding laundry, taking out trash. One of our favorite sayings is, “Don’t put it down, put it away.” Those small efforts really do make a big difference, and it feels good to see what you can accomplish together in just 20 minutes.
These small changes don’t happen overnight, but little by little they make a big difference. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s peace of mind. By working together, sharing responsibility, and keeping things simple, your family can create everyday habits that reduce stress and bring more calm to the chaos of everyday life.
