Celebrity Conductor Competition

Each year, the Texarkana Symphony Orchestra (TSO) hosts the Celebrity Conductor Competition, where four community members are chosen to raise funds for the orchestra. The one who raises the most money has the honor of conducting “Sleigh Ride” at the Christmas concert. I am thrilled to have been selected for this year’s competition and am passionate about supporting the TSO and its Youth Symphony Orchestra, both of which play vital roles in bringing the joy of music to our community.

Music has had a powerful influence on my life, beginning with my own time in the band from sixth grade through high school. My journey continued at Texas A&M University, where I was a proud member of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band. Those years in band instilled in me a deep appreciation for music and for the friendships and experiences that come with performing together. Music is a language that unites people, and the chance to help TSO continue its impact means a lot to me.

My wife, Amy, has also been involved in band, and the arts have always held a special place in her life as well. Music is a part of our family culture and has created wonderful memories and connections for us. Our oldest son, now a freshman at Southern Arkansas University, is carrying on this legacy as a member of the university band. Seeing him share in the joy of performing reminds us how transformative music can be. Our other children, each in their own way, have found joy in music, whether through band, orchestra, or personal exploration. Music has shaped their lives, providing them with new perspectives, friendships, and ways to express themselves.

Supporting TSO means supporting the idea that everyone deserves to experience the impact of music. Beyond the concerts, TSO’s educational programs, especially its Youth Symphony Orchestra,

offer a space where young musicians can grow, learn, and find inspiration. These programs create a legacy, nurturing a new generation that understands and appreciates the arts, helping young people build confidence, discipline, and a sense of community.
